BBC - Words in the News - a daily exercise

Just about my favourite site on the internet is Words in the News from the BBC. It is fantastic practice for reading, listening and especially improving your vocabulary. You will find there a huge archive of news stories written for learners of English about all sorts of topics.

The best part about this site is that it allows you to read and/or listen so you can practise both skills. It also helps you with important vocabulary too.

Your first task

  1. Go to BBC Words in the News and find a story that interests you. You will find an archive of past stories on the right hand side under More Reports.
  2. Read and/or listen to the story and note down 5/6 words or phrases you want to learn.
  3. Then try to tell your partner what the story was by using those words and phrases

Your second task

Your next task is to help with your grammar and vocabulary.

  1. Go to Cloze Test Creator
  2. Paste the text you read in the box
  3. Choose Interactive and No clues beneath the box
  4. Select the item of language to be tested from the list on the right
